I started in the wire rope and sling industry right out of high school in 1980 during one of the more prosperous times or as we call it an ”oil boom”. The hours on customer locations were long, but the overtime pay gave me the dollars to save for school, but something happened, I liked what I was doing.
While traveling to customers locations all over the state of Texas, Gulf of Mexico, and beyond, I had the chance to get familiar with many types of equipment and how wire rope and rigging applied to them, because most of the time I was applying it, by splicing and installation. I guess the product and customer base was interesting, because it was always changing and you could learn something at every turn. Time spent in the rigging shop as well as different industry applications in the field was a great learning experience, but something more was needed. In the mid 80’s a customer relations or sales job became available and that’s where I headed. The job was never about being the cheapest guy on the block, but about value added service and relationships with good companies and the people that worked for them.
“I found out very quickly that my customers wanted someone knowledgeable about their specific operations as well as the product and my “hands on experience” was a real plus.”
I found that again there needed to be some expansion in the way I related the rigging products to the end users, so I started training for companies that I did business with and some I didn’t. In preparation for this you learn, this is my education… from field to seminars for over 30 years in the same business. I have served the industry on numerous committees geared to a safe lifting environment and will continue to that endeavor.
